چکیده

Methods Between May and June 2014, 8 patients suffering from painful bone metastases were identified and recruited by the radiation oncology departments of Taipei Medical University Hospital, Wan Fang Hospital and Shuang Ho Hospital in Taipei, Taiwan. All patients chose to undergo MRgFUS treatment as their first choice of treatment for their painful bone lesions. Treatment was conducted using the ExAblate system (InSightec Ltd.), which integrates a focused ultrasound phased array therapeutic compartment with a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanner (GE 1.5T MRI). Therapeutic ultrasound waves were targeted to the painful lesions while monitoring the accumulated heat using real-time MR images. Efficacy of MRgFUS treatment was evaluated using the numerical rating scale (NRS), before treatment, and at 1 and 3 days; 1 and 2 weeks and at 1 month after treatment. (3 months follow-up results will be collected and reported when available).

Feasibility of volumetric MRI-guided high intensity focused ultrasound (MR-HIFU) for painful bone metastases

BACKGROUND Magnetic resonance-guided high intensity focused ultrasound (MR-HIFU) has recently emerged as an effective treatment option for painful bone metastases. We describe here the first experience with volumetric MR-HIFU for palliative treatment of painful bone metastases and evaluate the technique on three levels: technical feasibility, safety, and initial effectiveness. METHODS In this...

MR-guided focused ultrasound for painful bone metastases: safety when combined with chemotherapy

Background/introduction Magnetic Resonance guided Focused Ultrasound (MRgFUS) is a non-invasive, non-ionizing treatment producing thermal ablation using high intensity focused ultrasound and MR thermometry to denervate pain from bone metastases. A recent phase III study comparing MRgFUS to sham treatment for a painful bone metastasis allowed patients to be treated with concurrent chemotherapy a...

Palliative treatment of painful bone metastases with MR imaging–guided focused ultrasound surgery: a two-centre study

PURPOSE To evaluate the safety and initial efficacy of magnetic resonance (MR) imaging-guided focused ultrasound for the palliation of pain caused by bone metastases in patients in whom standard available treatments had been ineffective or not feasible. MATERIALS AND METHODS Informed consent was obtained in 11 patients (seven women, four men; average age, 58.6 years) with pain related to non-...

MR-guided high-intensity focused ultrasound for noninvasive cancer treatment

Magnetic resonance (MR)-high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) is an innovative, noninvasive tumour ablation technique. MR imaging and focused ultrasound are combined allowing real-time anatomic guidance and temperature mapping during treatment. Recently, the volumetric ablation approach has been introduced in order to reduce treatment length and provide more homogeneous tumour ablation. Afte...
